Business and Conflict of Interest Don’t Mix
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has a process in place for employees with an ownership interest in or employed by an external business entity to request permission to contract with the university for profit, goods or services.
Florida Statute 112.313 prohibits such contractual relationships that create a conflict of interest, which includes ownership of, or consultation for, a company, even if it supports FAU-related research or teaching efforts. This also applies to employees starting a new company or licensing FAU's intellectual property.
However, the statute does permit exemptions to conduct business with the university in certain situations. To request an exemption, FAU requires employees complete the requisite form, which discloses the outside activities and business interests of the individual, and obtain the necessary approvals from supervisors and other university personnel.
