Art of Science Judge: Dimitris Pados
Art Can Inspire and Inform Science
As a professor in Florida Atlantic’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, Dimitris Pados, Ph.D., said art can often help guide research.
“My take is that arts, visual or other forms of art, can inspire and even inform directions of thought in scientific inquiry, from theoretical mathematics down to applied engineering,” said Pados, a judge in the Division of Research sixth annual Art of Science photography contest. “Maybe art can be viewed as a form of science with few constraints and boundaries.”
Pados is also a fellow in the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Networking System Engineer, where he researches artificial intelligence and its influence on communication systems, as well as data analytics, and serves as the director of the Center for Connected Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
He recently earned the 2023 national John J. Guarrera Engineering Educator of the Year Award and has served as principal or co-principal investigator on more than 50 research grants including ones from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as authored more than 250 journal and conference articles for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
"Art can inspire and inform science and vice versa," Pados said.
