Madrid Professor Begins Two-year Appointment at Sandler School

Affiliate International Visiting Scholar in Civil Law and Social Work

Marta Blanco Carrasco, Ph.D., professor of civil law and social work, was recently appointed an affiliate international visiting scholar in the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work, Florida Atlantic College of Social Work and Criminal Justice.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Blanco joining us as an affiliate scholar,” said Naelys Luna, PhD, MSW, dean of the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice. “This appointment reflects our shared commitment to pursuing international collaborations, enhancing research opportunities, increasing student’s exposure to global perspectives, and further expanding the reach and impact of our college mission.”

Blanco has previously collaborated with Allan Barsky, Ph.D., professor in the Sandler School of Social Work, in the intersections of social work, law, peace, justice and conflict resolution. Blanco and Barsky are currently partnering on various projects including their work with an international advisory board to develop a university-wide conflict resolution course at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). They are also co-editing a new book, along with Marianna Colvin, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice. The manuscript relates to justice and peace for families experiencing separation, divorce, child protection concerns and adult guardianship concerns.

Blanco and Luna are also spearheading a cooperation agreement between Florida Atlantic University and UCM, which could lead to student and faculty exchange programs, as well as other research and instructional collaborations.

Blanco is also actively engaged with Florida Atlantic’s Interprofessional Education and Practice Program, and will serve as a guest lecturer in the global issues course in the Sandler School.
